This paper discusses the implications of legislation introduced by the Israeli Prime Minister in November 2014 that would define Israel as the nation state of the Jews. The author examines why Netanyahu insists on Palestinian recognition of the Jewish character of Israel as well as why Palestinians oppose this point of view. Overall, he argues that the proposed law could serve as a tool to deny Arabs their political rights, lead to greater polarization of the Israeli society and make peace negotiations increasingly difficult.
