This brief examines some of the measures the US is likely to take when it takes over the presidency of the Arctic Council from Canada in May 2015. The authors highlight that in contrast to Canada’s chairmanship which has emphasized economic development, the United States will pursue an agenda heavily focused on environmental protection and sustainable development. They then make recommendations to the Finnish government on how it may wish to use its presidency, which is due to begin in 2017.
