In light of the September 2014 agreement which would allow Canberra to resettle refugees who have arrived on Australia's shores in Cambodia, this brief discusses both Australia’s resettlement policy and Cambodia’s capacity to receive refugees. The author argues that prevailing poverty and corruption impedes sufficient refugee protection in Cambodia. He therefore suggests that Australia reconsiders refugee resettlement and launches a regional asylum seeker burden sharing system.
