This paper examines the likely details of the US-Japan Defense Guidelines which are expected to be released at the end of 2014. In particular, the author examines the circumstances under which the US could come to Tokyo's aid in so-called 'grey zone' situations, where it is disputable if a clear act of aggression against Japan is taking place.
