This report analyzes existing regulations and procedures in EU member states that deal with the automatic involuntary loss of EU nationality should a person lose their nationality of a member state. These regulations and procedures are assessed in light of international and European standards, in particular with regard to the prevention of arbitrary deprivation of nationality, the principle of proportionality and procedural guarantees. The authors also offer recommendations for policy-makers, judges and other authorities in the EU on how to deal with this issue of citizenship loss in the EU.
