This report examines the ongoing controversy over NATO's ballistic missile defense (BMD) system in Europe. At a time of rising tensions between Russia and the West over Ukraine, the author explores the objectives behind establishing the BMD and the underlying reasons for the disagreements between Russia and NATO over this. He also discusses the importance of the BMD at a time of growing concern over Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs.
