This paper examines the efforts of the global coalition against the Islamic State (IS) and the role NATO has played in combating the group. The authors suggest that while NATO found common ground in collectively condemning IS and helping to establish an international coalition against the group, the Alliance has not developed a collective strategy on how to deal with IS or what part it will play in the coalition. The authors then describe scenarios of how the fight against IS could develop and how they could affect NATO's position toward the conflict.
