In view of China’s December 2014 deadline to submit its defense in the arbitration case against its South China Sea claims brought by the Philippines, this paper provides an overview of Beijing's legal position and examines how the US views China’s maritime claims. The author also looks at the arbitration tribunal's next steps if China does not submit anything and refuses to take part in the official proceedings.
