This study 1) assesses the impact Western powers had on Central Asia while intervening in Afghanistan from 2001-2014, and 2) examines the security challenges the region now faces, which includes reconciling Chinese and Russian interests. In the last case, the study concludes that Moscow will have a decisive influence on the region's security in the short-term, but it will not assume responsibility for it in the long run.
