This note provides background reading on the post-2015 United Nations development goals and the process of their negotiation. The author first explains the 2001 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and their achievements prior to analyzing the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), scheduled to be adopted in September 2015. The author then sets out the UK government's position on the SDGs which is to argue for no more than ten to twelve goals in comparison to the 17 that are being negotiated by the UN Open Working Group.
