This note provides background information on the increases in political violence which have occurred in Libya since the country's general election in June 2014. The author discusses 1) the spread of the conflict; 2) the role of oil money in fueling the violence; 3) the UN's involvement in peace talks; 4) the issue of migration and the EU response to illegal trafficking; and 5) UK policy towards Libya. He also includes a short commentary reflecting on the views of NGOs and experts on the situation in Libya.
