This paper examines the multilateral development bank (MDB) model and the possibility of establishing such a bank in the Arctic in order to raise funds and advance environmentally sustainable development in the region. In general, the authors contend that the MDB model has certain features that may help address the special challenges of the Arctic, particularly as it has been proven effective in raising significant amounts of supplementary financing on international capital markets at relatively low costs to governments.
