This paper analyzes the changes made to China’s conscription system since 2001, which have progressively made it easier to enlist college students into the military. The author argues that the driving force behind the changes in the system was the urgent need to modernize China’s national defense and armed forces. Moreover, she states that the growing enlistment of college students is beneficial both for the armed forces and for China as a whole, given the difficult labor market for graduates in the country.
