This paper provides an overview of hydrolic fracturing - or fracking - which is a method used for extracting natural gas and oil trapped in shale formations. More specifically, the authors examine 1) what fracking is and where it is occurring in the US; 2) how much oil and gas fracking can unlock; 3) the environmental risks associated with fracking; 4) how the US government is regulating fracking; 5) whether other countries beside the US are exploring the possibility of using fracking to extract oil and gas; and 5) how rising supplies of natural gas through fracking have benefited the US economy.
