This paper discusses the combination of historical, geopolitical and ideological factors that have resulted in the emergence of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). The author contends that the collapse of pan-Arab nationalism has resulted in an absence of the state, a loss of a shared national narrative and weak leverage of big powers in the region; a vacuum which ISIS has opportunistically filled.
