This bulletin discusses the implications of the decapitation of two Japanese hostages by the Islamic State in January 2015 for Japan’s security role in the world. The author describes how Abe’s administration is heading towards a more realist approach to its foreign policy and making a more proactive contribution to peace; something which is attracting public support in Japan.
