This paper examines the prospects for a rapprochement between Iran and the US in light of the rise of a common enemy in the form of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria as well as the P5+1 negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program. In general, the author suggest that it is unlikely that there will be a US-Iran rapprochement for a number of reasons, including the potential impact that such an improvement in relations could have on Washington's alliances in the Middle East. However, he also suggests that the rise of the IS and the nuclear talks could lead to US-Iran ties being less antagonistic.
