This monograph explores the potential benefits of closer defense cooperation between the Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland) and the United States. In particular, the authors 1) review the current levels of military cooperation among these states and why they aren’t as robust as they could be; 2) highlight the particular strengths and weaknesses of each of the Nordic region’s militaries; 3) explore the possible utility of specific joint initiatives among the above states; and 4) examine the case of Finland, as the nation with both the greatest exposure to Russia and the greatest emphasis on self-defense in its security policy.
