This report discusses the role and impact of African diaspora communities around the globe and their contribution, particularly through remittances, to their native countries. The author examines the contribution these communities make to development and reconstruction in impoverished enclaves, island micro-states and war-ravaged countries which are particularly prone to exceptionally high emigration flows. However, he also highlights how informal private transfers from migrant communities can be used to support armed struggles or terrorist attacks, or to facilitate money laundering.
