This brief looks at the implications of the terrorist attack on the French magazine 'Charlie Hebdo' and the killing of a Jordanian pilot by Islamic State (IS) in Syria, both of which occurred in early 2015. The author contends that the attacks on Charlie Hebdo will lead to much more intensive counterterrorism measures in France and greater security cooperation across Europe, but that it could also lead to further anti-Islamism in the region. In terms of the execution of the Jordanian pilot, he claims that the response to this action suggest that there is an increase in the resolve of states in the region to confront the IS.
