This paper examines the history and underpinnings of US grand strategy, where it stands today, the main actors in the global strategic landscape and how they effect the strategy. In general, the author argues that the US has strayed from its historic and cultural approach to the world, leaving behind its traditional maritime-focused, technologically innovative, free-trade based strategy. The author also argues that the US has replaced these tenets with a focus on foreign land-based operations, over regulation, and profligate deficit spending, something which has undermined the global position of the country. Finally, he provides recommendations on how the US can improve its strategic position.
