This paper discusses the role over-the-counter (OTC) financial derivatives (securities traded between parties without the supervision of a formal exchange) played in the global financial crisis and the efforts made by the G20 countries to regulate OTC derivatives following the crisis. The author also looks at the lessons Europe can learn from Canada, which successfully avoided the worst of the financial crisis and contained the systemic risks posed by OTC derivatives.
