This paper examines the Africa Peer Review Mechanism’s (APRM) examination of the state of corporate governance in Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. In general, the author finds that the countries studied have satisfactory legal and institutional frameworks for business, but that the awareness and application of corporate governance principles is uneven and sometimes poor. He also highlights the role corporate governance can play in driving development in Africa.
