This paper examines the problems of Australia’s approach to its defense strategy contending that successive governments have failed to clearly and succinctly define such a strategy, something that could have serious policy and operational consequences if not addressed. The author also contends that in its forthcoming 2015 Defense White Paper, Australia’s government should produce a clear defense and military strategy. Furthermore, he suggest that this strategy should outline how the country can produce a more versatile Australian Defense Force (ADF), diversify its regional defense relations, and improve risk management, defense acquisition and mobilization.
