This paper examines the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (SPFTZ), founded in 2013, which aims to facilitate trade and to liberalize China’s capital account. In particular, the author focuses on why China needs this pilot zone, the differences between the SPFTZ and other free trade zones, and how the SPFTZ has developed since its creation.
