This paper discusses the extent of state power over Islam in Egypt as well as attempts to reform Islam in the country. In particular, the author focuses on 1) how the state in Egypt has attempted to control Islam through the institutionalized elements of the religion in the country, including the Ministry of Awqaf (religious endowments), the Al-Azhar (a university and mosque), and the office of the Grand Mufti; 2) the various sources of religious inspiration for people in Egypt; and 3) the factors that could influence the future form of Islam in Egypt.
