This paper examines how diaspora and local aid organizations have responded to the humanitarian crisis created by the civil war in Syria as well as how international aid organizations can improve the way they work together with these actors. The authors also focus on 1) how diaspora and local aid organizations in Syria have adapted to the challenges they face in light of the lack of the presence of international aid organizations operating in the country; and 2) what the traditional aid community can learn from Syria about the potential future challenges it could face in its efforts to provide humanitarian aid.
