This paper provides a brief overview of the situation in Abkhazia since the Abkhazian-Georgian war (1992–1993) as well as the implications of a Russian-Abkhazian treaty, which came into effect in March 2015 and defines the relations between the two actors. The author argues that the treaty provides a “roadmap” for the incorporation of Abkhazia into the Russian area of defense and economic and social affairs. He also discusses what this means for the future of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict and Abkhazia's political independence.
