This commentary examines the role that protests and demonstrations have played in Tunisia's political life since the fall of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's regime in January 2011. On the positive side, the protests and demonstrations have been used to promote social justice and equitable development in the country’s deprived regions. On the negative side, bottom-up mobilization has repeatedly been used by politicians as a security-breaching tool against their adversaries.
