This paper examines the state of Russia today following 16 years under President Vladimir Putin as well as what the future could hold for the country over the medium term. To do this it focuses on: 1) the stability of the incumbent Russian political regime following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and its involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine; 2) what the most important socioeconomic challenges are facing Moscow, particularly in light of Western economic sanctions against Russia; and 3) whether these challenges will affect Putin’s ability to remain in power. The author also addresses the future of NATO-Russian relations.
