UN peacekeeping operations obviously affect the health of host populations in negative and positive ways. After assessing the existing guidelines, principles, and practices that UN health authorities have in place, this brief recommends specific ways to improve them, to include strengthening the pre-deployment medical checks carried out by troop-contributing countries, conducting health impact assessments prior to deployment, and more.
