This issue of the RAD looks at the nascent Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and the impact Russia’s economic troubles are having on Central Asia. More specifically, the individual articles look at 1) how Western sanctions against Russia and the drop in global oil prices have affected the economies of Central Asia; 2) Kazakhstan’s perceptions of the EEU and how they will shape its role as a Union member; and 3) the potential impact of Kyrgyzstan joining the EEU, which will take place in May 2015, along with the possibility of Tajikistan becoming a Union member anytime soon.
