This analysis discusses the implications of the decision of the US and Cuba to restore diplomatic ties in late 2014 and the normalization of relations between the two countries. Among other issues, the author focuses on 1) the reaction to the decision in the two countries; 2) why the diplomatic changes will oblige Cuba to introduce political change; 3) the part that nationalism plays in politics in Cuba and the US as well as what this means for the future of relations between the two states; and 4) the challenges that will face Cuba as it attempts to normalize its relations with other countries around the world.
