This paper provides an overview of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS). More specifically, the authors look at 1) the origins of IS; 2) how IS has expanded; 3) IS's relationship with al-Qaeda; 4) how IS is financed; 5) whether IS poses a threat beyond Iraq and Syria; and 6) the US strategy towards IS.
