This paper outlines the various international and regional security initiatives in which the China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is involved and what this says about China’s national security policy. Among other issues, the author describes the PLA’s role in UN peacekeeping missions and humanitarian and disaster relief efforts as well as trust-building exercises with other countries’ militaries. The author also examines the challenges facing the PLA's efforts to strengthen its international role.
