This monograph examines the role of the police component in the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), the first and only peace support operation authorized and led jointly by the African Union (AU) and the UN. The authors first examine the Darfur crisis in Sudan and the responses to it by regional and international actors. They then look at the roles and functions of the UNAMID Police as well as the challenges they face in attempting to implement the mission’s mandate to protect civilians in Darfur. Finally, they identify good practices within the UNAMID Police and provide recommendations on how it could improve.
