This brief discusses the argument that the European Union should engage with the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) to improve the EU’s relationship with Russia. In particular, the authors outline some of the main assumptions in this argument and how they are problematic in the way they perceive integration in Europe’s eastern neighborhood. Finally, they argue that any EU engagement with the EEU should move forward with due caution and include a number of conditions with regard to Russia's actions in Ukraine as well as Russia's WTO commitments.
