This paper discusses the implications of setting up an Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as proposed by China in October 2013. In particular, the author examines the internal challenges which will be posed to China by its running of the AIIB and points out that ensuring that the bank functions effectively may actually undercut China’s ambitious goals for the institution.
