This report discusses the 'Intellectualist Movement' in Ethiopia, which is an elite-based Islamic reform movement that's inspired by the Muslim Brotherhood. More specifically, the report's authors examine 1) the origins and development of the movement throughout the 1990s, 2) its interaction with Ethiopian authorities, and 3) the moderating socio-political influence it has had, which highlights the complexity of Islamism and the need to approach it in a nuanced and localized way.
