This paper addresses the proposed transfer of the oversight of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) - which is responsible for a number of Internet protocol resources - away from the US government. The author also looks at 1) the implications for Internet governance of the architecture of critical Internet resources; 2) the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and its relationship with the US government through IANA; 3) why the US-ICANN relationship caused controversy; 4) ICANN’s efforts to find a successor to the IANA; and 5) the accountability of ICANN.
