This paper uses case studies to examine the progress made in results-based aid (RBA) programs, or foreign assistance programs in which one government disburses funds to another for achieving an outcome. In particular if focuses on RBA programs involving the GAVI Alliance, which attempts to increase immunization coverage in developing countries; the Amazon Fund, which promotes forest conservation; secondary education promotion in Ethiopia; and Salud Mesoamérica 2015, which aims to reduce equity gaps in maternal and child health across Central America. The authors also examine the theories that attempt to explain how RBA increases development program effectiveness.
