This brief discusses the growing links between different conflicts and actors across the Sahara and Sahel regions. It also examines how a lack of regional security cooperation combined with a number of international initiatives that primarily fit their own sponsor’s political priorities, risk enabling militant groups to further deepen cross-border links. To coherently address this issue, the authors urge the European Union and its international partners to follow a more unified security strategy and work more closely with regional institutions.
