This paper discusses developments in three Syrian cities – Aleppo, Homs and Damascus – during the country's civil war as well as UN efforts to bring about ceasefires in particular areas in the country, starting with Aleppo. The author also discusses the efforts undertaken by Germany, other Western actors and Russia to find a solution to the conflict, as well as the importance of dealing with regional tensions.
