This backgrounder provides an overview of the intra-state conflict in Yemen between the Yemeni government and the Houthi, a Zaydi Shia movement backed by Iran. More specifically, the author explains 1) the background and causes of the conflict; 2) the main parties to the conflict; 3) the affect the conflict has had on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula; 4) the humanitarian situation in the country; and 5) the prospects for a solution to the conflict.
