This backgrounder provides an overview of US-Saudi relations. In particular, the authors look at 1) the 70 year history of the alliance between the two countries; 2) the role oil plays in US-Saudi ties; 3) cooperation between the countries in the fields of defense and counterterrorism; 4) where their interests and opinions diverge; and 5) the business ties which bind the two states.
