This paper examines Russia’s approach to conflict, how it has developed since the 1970s, and how it was applied in Moscow's intervention in Ukraine in 2014. The author first argues that Russia’s approach to conflict is primarily characterized by a combination of non-military and military means. He then highlights two factors that played a key role in shaping Russia's approach in the recent past: 1) the combination of air and space power with emerging technologies; and 2) the revolutions in Georgia (2003) and Ukraine (2004), which Moscow saw as US and EU-orchestrated coups to isolate Russia. Finally, he discusses the implications of this Russia's approach to conflict for NATO.
