This commentary discusses the political situation in Egypt since the election of President al-Sisi's in 2014. The author observes that even though the political situation under al-Sisi's military regime has stabilized, the extent of repression against the political opposition, and especially the Muslim Brotherhood, has increased. Alongside the repression, the regime wants to boost economic development through mega-projects, such as building a new Suez Canal, and highlight its importance as a regional player by intervening in Yemen. However, he also contends that al-Sisi's domestic and international ambitions could be hampered by Egypt's delicate economic position and domestic dissent in the Sinai.
