This commentary discusses China’s intention of deploying floating islands to back up its territorial claims in the South China Sea. In particular, the author explores 1) the civilian and military uses of such islands; 2) their advantages in terms of aiding China's maritime claims; and 3) the gaps in international maritime law pertaining to floating islands.
