Prior to Kazakhstan’s April 26, 2015 presidential elections, which incumbent president Nursultan Nazarbayev will most likely win, this bulletin discusses the main economic, political and foreign problems facing the country. Among other issues, the authors examine 1) the problems created for Kazakhstan by Russia’s aggressive foreign policy, as demonstrated by its involvement in Ukraine; 2) the problem of who will succeed the incumbent president once he is no longer able to serve in the position; and 3) the growing importance of China to the country. They also address the EU’s policies towards Kazakhstan and what approach the Union should adopt in the future.
