This bulletin discusses Poland’s medium-range air and missile defense system - a priority and the biggest investment area of the country’s modernization plans for its armed forces for the period 2013-2022. The author also addresses 1) the existing state of Poland’s air defense system and its lack of a missile defense capability; 2) the impact of technical negotiations over a possible provider of a missile defense system and Russia’s intervention in Ukraine in 2014 on Poland’s decision to purchase the American Patriot system; and 3) the implications of the selection of the Patriot for Poland’s future defense, role in NATO and relations with the US.
